Highland Lib Dem challenges SNP to debate car park tax folly

Craig Harrow, Highland Liberal Democrat prospective candidate for Ross, Skye and Lochaber has issued an invitation to the SNP to defend their Working Parking Levy in the Highlands.

Harrow has challenged Highland representatives to back local people rather than their party or to defend the “poll tax on wheels” that will hit Highlanders hardest, a burden on those least able to afford it or escape it.

Commenting on the debate challenge, Craig Harrow said:

“This pernicious, ill-considered and regressive attack on hard working highlanders should never have been given a second’s thought given its potentially disproportionate impact in rural Scotland.

“It is right that SNP representatives are challenged, held to account and forced to explain the impact that this SNP tax will have on rural communities, rural economies and fragile businesses. They can explain the horrendous cuts to council budgets that will impact road maintenance programmes and other services across the Highlands that are resulting in such hair brained nonsense even being contemplated.

“We can debate in any village hall in Wester Ross - say Coigach Community Hall or Uig on Skye or wherever suits in Lochaber - I can only imagine how tricky it will be to get there not using a car.

“All I ask is that SNP MP or MSP supporters of the Workplace Parking Levy truthfully explain the impact on local people who do not have the luxury of adequate public transport alternatives and rightly regard their car as an utter essential. Come and listen to local folk and encourage your colleagues to support local communities, businesses and wiser heads who will say categorically to the SNP ‘Scrap the unfair car park tax’.”
