Difficulties tracing "pandemic pound" must be ironed out

Responding to the new report by the Auditor General for Scotland and the Accounts Commission on Scotland's financial response to Covid-19, which notes difficulties in tracing the "pandemic pound" over time, Scottish Liberal Democrat finance spokesperson John Ferry said:

"The safety net of our UK Treasury helped the Scottish Government to weather the pandemic and pursue unprecedented financial interventions to save jobs and keep people's heads above water.

"However, this report recognises that assessing where money went and how effectively it was spent has been challenging.

"Prudent use of reserves will help local authorities to build back after the pandemic but they cannot rely on one-off windfalls to fund ongoing spending forever.

"The Scottish Government must ensure that councils are properly funded to invest in local services and that Covid spending is properly monitored to ensure that it is being put to good use."
