Responding to the publication of the Scottish Government's consultation A Deposit Return Scheme for Scotland, Scottish Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson Mariam Mahmood said:
"European partners have shown that deposit return systems can be introduced, reducing landfill and the amount of plastic that ends up in our seas.
"Campaigners have fought hard to secure this progress. The Scottish Government must now work with them to design a system that will have the same transformative results as the plastic bag scheme.
"If the SNP Government is serious about protecting the environment it also needs to make a raft of other changes, starting with introducing a disposable coffee cup levy and ending its backing for the destructive expansion of Heathrow."
