Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP today warned the Tories can’t be trusted on mental health.
Following the publication of the Conservative party’s ‘new’ mental health policy, Mr Cole-Hamilton commented:
“The Conservative plan contains many individual items that started life in the Scottish Liberal Democrat manifesto last spring.
“But nobody can trust the Conservatives on mental health.
“After they came to power in the UK with a majority in 2015 they abandoned many of the new mental health initiatives they had promised. They scrapped the scale of the promised investment in children’s mental health care. And they failed to implement the flagship new access standards in mental health which came into force in April.”

- After winning a majority, the Tories cut the promised investment in children’s mental health care. And they have failed to implement the flagship new access standards in mental health which came into force in April. In the first year of the promised investment, only £143m was released instead of the £250m expected. In the second year of the programme the government chose not to make up this £107m shortfall. Nor was the money that was allocated to clinical commissioning groups ring-fenced, allowing it to be diverted into other areas.
