Commenting on new figures from ISD Scotland showing that:
- In 2017-18 there were 18,422 cases of heart disease recorded, up from 17,915 the previous year.
- The CHD mortality rate was five times greater in Scotland’s most deprived areas compared to the least deprived.
Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton said:
“We can’t allow the progress that has been made in tackling heart disease to slow down, or even reverse.
“People from the poorest backgrounds are five times more likely to die from coronary heart disease. We need to address this huge deprivation divide.
“The Scottish Government need to ensure they are stepping up the fight against heart disease in every community.”
