Edinburgh Western MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton has today criticised the Scottish Football Association after new research suggested that almost 1,300 coaches were working with children without full background checks.
Speaking after the Health and Sport committee took evidence from the SFA and Scottish Youth Football Association, Mr Cole-Hamilton said:
“Just weeks before reports of child abuse in Scottish football surfaced in the press last October, the SFA issued a directive pushing clubs to complete PVG checks.
“This is ten years after the act was passed. The SFA and the SYFA have questions to answer about why it took them so long to get to this point.
“Kids in football need better protection. That’s why the SFA need to do more to ensure that all coaches who are working with children have had a PVG check and weak links in the chain, such as where a coach is waiting for a PVG check to be completed, are removed.”
