Cole-Hamilton: Health Secretary needs to “get a grip” of ailing A&E performance

Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has today called on the Health Minister to “get a grip” of ailing A&E performance as winter approaches, after official figures show performance has dropped below 90% once again.

The new statistics show performance against the 4-hour waiting time target sits at 89.1%. The Scottish Government’s target is 95%, which has not been achieved since July 2017.

The weekly figures also show 319 patients waited over 8 hours and 50 patients waited over 12 hours.

Alex Cole-Hamilton said:

“Yet again too many people are waiting too long for treatment at A&E.

“After years at the helm the SNP are still nowhere near getting a grip on A&E performance. Doctors and nurses work tirelessly but they’re struggling because of scarce resources, recruitment problems and a failure to act on bed blocking elsewhere.

“The latest workforce plan’s publication has been pushed into next year, just like those that went before it.

"It’s clear problems are just being stored up for the future, but winter is firmly on its way now.”
