Cole-Hamilton: FM’s treatment law broken 200 times a day

Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP today said the First Minister’s 12-week Treatment Time Guarantee is “utterly worthless”, after it was missed by the largest ever margin on record.

New figures from ISD Scotland reveal the legally binding Treatment Time Guarantee was met for just 72.7% of patients in the last quarter of 2018.

In NHS Highland, the guarantee was met for only 54.7% of patients, followed by Lanarkshire (57.2%) and Grampian (57.5%).

Performance has fallen despite the Scottish Government publishing its improvement plan on 23 October 2018.

Mr Cole-Hamilton commented:

“This shows how shallow the SNP Government’s promises are on the NHS. Nicola Sturgeon went as far as putting this treatment guarantee into law, but her own government is now breaking that law 200 times a day. It is utterly worthless.

“A Scottish Liberal Democrat investigation has found patients waiting up to 2 years for treatment, despite being told they would receive it within 3 months.

“The SNP Government’s solution is to stop breaching its own law by 2021 – a full decade after it was passed. It’s hard to believe they will even manage that given performance is getting worse and worse. Scottish Liberal Democrats demand better.”
