Commenting on the publication of the Scottish Government's long overdue suicide prevention plan, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
"The Scottish Government can't be forgiven for letting the last strategy expire 586 days ago, holding back the development of critical and much-needed services. Two people a day die by suicide and it is one of the biggest killers of young men.
"However, I really want this new plan to be a success and save lives. People need to access support when they need it, consistently and with continuity of care.
“Crisis beds are regularly being occupied by people deemed fit to leave because support services are not available elsewhere in the NHS.
“That’s why it is crucial that staff who have worked around the clock finally should get the support and resources they need.
"Early intervention also makes a huge difference. That is why the new mental health minister must also immediately get on and end the scandal of the worst child mental health waits on record and adults waiting over 2 years for treatment.”
