Alistair Carmichael, Orkney and Shetland MP, has today hit out at the UK Government’s proposed changes to bereavement benefits, branding them "callous and cruel."
From April 2017 the Bereavement Support Payment replaces the three-tier system of Bereavement Payment, Bereavement Allowance and Widowed Parent's Allowance. However, experts have warned that under the new rules families could be thousands of pounds worse off.
Commenting on the changes, Mr. Carmichael said:
“Cuts to bereavement benefits are callous and cruel.
“It is not the place of Government to decide what a person’s individual grieving period is, but these changes are justified by the government because the current system ‘could act as a trap preventing people moving on with their lives.’
“These changes will abandon some of the most vulnerable people in our society, and will hit children the hardest.”
