Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has today said that the decision by Aberdeenshire councillors to back a vote on the final Brexit deal with an option to remain is "a lightning bolt" aimed at the SNP and Labour leaderships as he urged them to get off the fence and back a People's Vote.
At a meeting of Aberdeenshire council, a majority of SNP councillors joined Liberal Democrat, Green, independent and Labour members as the council voted 33 to 26 in favour of a final say.
Mr Rennie said:
"This is a lightning bolt from the grassroots targeted right at the SNP and Labour leaderships. Local councillors are showing the leadership that Nicola Sturgeon and Richard Leonard are lacking.
"The First Minister says she will not stand in the way of a People's Vote but she is having to be dragged to the table when she should be out front passionately making the case for the whole of the UK to remain in the EU.
"The public must be given their right to avert economic disaster with a final say on the Brexit deal."
