Responding to the news that there has been a 3% (180) annual increase in children living in temporary accommodation, and a 3% increase in homeless applications since 2017/18, Scottish Liberal Democrat social security spokesperson Caron Lindsay commented:
“I am furious to see yet another increase in the number of children without a secure, permanent home. It is heartbreaking to think of so many families in crisis. It really is time that both governments took this seriously and turned words into action.
“With the number of homelessness applications rising again, and now numbering 100 per day, both the Scottish and UK Governments need to make changes. They have both failed people and put them at greater risk of homelessness.
“The SNP failed to build thousands of homes promised for social rent and is overseeing the scandal of people waiting over a year for mental health treatment. The Conservatives’ devastating cuts to social security have left people at greater risk of eviction and homelessness too.
“Children desperately need the stability of a home to call their own.
“It’s time to get to grips with the crushing housing crisis. We need to see social renting re-established as a long-term option, incentives to bring the thousands of long-term empty homes back into use and fairness at the heart of the social security system.”
