New proposals to tackle nuisance calls are a 'vital step forward' says Scottish Liberal Democrat connectivity spokesperson Mike Rumbles MSP after the UK Government agreed to accept Liberal Democrat proposals for tough new regulations on claims management companies who undertake cold calling.
UK Government ministers declared that the government will accept Liberal Democrat proposals into the Financial Guidance and Claims Bill. The Government agreed to Lib Dem proposals for a "ban on unsolicited real-time direct approaches by, on behalf of, or for the benefit of companies carrying out claims management services and a ban on the use by claims management companies of data obtained by such methods."
Mr Rumbles said:
“Scottish Liberal Democrats and our colleagues in Westminster have consistently pressed both of Scotland’s Governments to go further in tackling nuisance calls and we are pleased that the UK Government has chosen to accept these sensible proposals.
"In some parts of Scotland almost 50% of calls are coming from time-wasters, scammers and chancers. For vulnerable people, this is not just an irritation, it is source of exploitation and harassment.
"The Scottish and UK Governments must now ensure that they are dialled in together to make sure that these proposals are delivered and the cord is cut on nuisance calls."
