Responding to reports that Scottish teachers have been giving food and clothes to children who cannot afford it, Scottish LIberal Democrat social security spokesperson Caron Lindsay said:
"Recent figures suggest that more than a million people in Scotland are living in poverty, including one in four children. This is completely unacceptable, no child should have to depend on the kindness of teachers for food or clothing.
"These kind-hearted teachers are going far beyond the call of duty to help children in need. It is utterly shameful that such poverty can exist in a country as rich as Scotland.
"After years of Liberal Democrat pressure, the Scottish Government introduced their version of the pupil premium which has been successfully used to provide breakfast and lunch clubs elsewhere in the UK. However, the Scottish Government's version falls far short of the resources which are needed."
