Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has criticised the Scottish Government for the complete failure of its substance misuse strategy after new figures revealed that the most common diagnosis for mental health discharges was mental and behavioural disorders due to psychoactive substance use.
This comes in the wake of figures revealing Scotland now has the worst drug death rate in the developed world, reaching a record high of 1,200 in 2018.
Alex Cole-Hamilton commented:
“These figures are yet another indictment of the SNP government’s complete failure to effectively address drug-related harm.
“The failure of Scotland’s last substance misuse strategy, cooked up as part of a budget deal between the SNP and Conservatives, can be measured in human lives. We now have a rate of drugs deaths almost three times as high as it is in the rest of the UK.
“Another decade of failure on this scale cannot be tolerated. Scottish Liberal Democrats have set out a clear practical plan for how to turn this around, including protecting drug and alcohol partnership budgets from a repeat of the SNP’s cuts.”
