Responding to a new report suggesting that the number of job losses in the UK oil and gas sector was worse than expected last year, Liberal Democrat shadow Scottish Secretary Jamie Stone said:
“The North Sea oil crisis has forced tens of thousands of people out of a job and this new report highlights the stark reality that more jobs are still at risk. This is an incredibly dificult situation for all of those in the industry.
“However, despite a loss of decommissioning contracts and dramatic cuts to support for renewables by the UK Tory Government, it is encouraging that most contractors are still hopeful of potential growth in decommissioning and the renewables sector.
“The Scottish Government has been slow off the mark in putting in place the infrastructure needed for decommissioning. It is essential that both the Scottish and UK governments urgently work together to create an environment that supports businesses, develops our skills base and delivers the economic opportunities presented by the energy sector.”
