SNP sliding backwards on mental health services

Scottish Liberal Democrats have warned that the SNP Government is sliding backwards as the UK Government strides forwards in its efforts to improve mental health services.

The warning comes after Deputy Prime Minister today announced he has established a new mental health taskforce which will examine a range of issues around the provision of mental health services.

Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Jim Hume MSP said:

“While Liberal Democrats in the UK Government are making big strides forwards to improve mental health services in England the SNP Government in Scotland are sliding backwards.

“There are 883 fewer staffed mental health beds since 2009, hundreds of young people face waits of over six months to begin treatment and our hospitals have lost 64 specialist mental health nurses.

“On Tuesday this week we will learn if our health boards are moving any closer towards meeting the Scottish Government’s new targets on mental health treatment.

“With six health boards still failing to meet the original target for CAMHS it is clear we need to see the same rigorous approach from the Scottish Government. That approach should begin by enshrining in law the equal treatment of mental and physical ill health.”
