Responding to the findings of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Scotland’s residential market survey, which indicates the insufficient supply of houses is pushing up housing prices, Scottish Liberal Democrat housing spokesperson Caron Lindsay said:
“It’s time for the SNP to get to grips with the housing crisis. We need more homes of all types of tenure, but particularly homes for social rent. We need to re-establish this as a valid long-term option for people and the Scottish Government has the levers to do this.
“There are thousands of families on council waiting lists and with prices skyrocketing young people have less and less hope of ever getting onto the property ladder.
“There are tens of thousands of homes that have been empty for a long time, including 1,000 that have been vacant for over a decade. The government should also turn their attention to them and consider a help to renovate loan, creating more homes by bringing neglected properties back into use.”
