Scottish Liberal Democrat housing spokesperson Jim Hume MSP has blasted the SNP Government’s inaction on social housing after figures published today showed an increase in the number of children housed in temporary accommodation.
Between April and June this year, an additional 626 children were living in temporary accommodation, a 15 percent increase.
Commenting, Mr Hume said:
“This is a stark reminder that you don’t have to live on the street to be homeless.
“It’s worrying that the number of children in temporary housing is increasing.
“If we are to meaningfully meet our homelessness obligations, individuals and families must be placed in long term housing. This would give households the security and stability they need to break the cycle of poverty.
“The development of social housing has continued to decline on the SNP’s watch. Audit Scotland has said that Scotland needs at least 14,000 more socially rented homes to meet demand.
“This situation will only worsen as people buy more of the estate ahead of Right to Buy reaching an end in 2017.
“Liberal Democrats want more social housing so that everyone has the chance to get on in life."
