SNP can unlock 11th hour budget talks if they take independence off the table

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has today said that the SNP Finance Secretary must take independence off the table if he wants to unlock 11th hour talks with the Liberal Democrats over the forthcoming Scottish budget.

Mr Rennie said:

“If the Finance Secretary’s talks with the Green Party are faltering, he knows exactly what he needs to do to unlock talks.

“The damage done by independence to public services would be enormous. We are not asking the SNP to abandon their belief in independence. We just want the SNP minority Government to cease preparations for the remainder of this Parliament.

“We can see with the chaos of Brexit the economic damage caused by breaking up long term economic partnerships. Those who say that wouldn’t be repeated with independence are fooling themselves.  We don’t need more chaos to compound the chaos of Brexit.

“Scottish Liberal Democrats are willing to work on a budget that delivers for Scotland on education, mental health and local government but the SNP have to be prepared to take independence off the table before they pick up the phone again.”
