Scottish Liberal Democrats have this morning launched their campaign in Edinburgh West. Christine Jardine, who is the candidate for the constituency was joined by Menzies Campbell, Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP and party leader Willie Rennie.
The launch of the campaign comes the day after the local council elections where Liberal Democrats doubled the number of councillors within Edinburgh with one candidate receiving over 6,000 first preference votes within their ward.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
“The results from the council elections show that we are strongest in the areas where we are challenging the SNP at Westminster on 8th June.
“In Edinburgh West’s Almond ward the Lib Dem candidate got over 6,000 votes which is the highest number by any candidate from any party in any ward in Scotland since 1994.
“The results like this across Scotland are a real springboard to beat the SNP where we are challenging them on June 8th. East Dunbartonshire, Argyll, Caithness and North East Fife were superb. We made gains in Gordon and Ross, Skye and Lochaber too.
“Our pro-UK, pro-Europe message with investment in education and mental health is strongest in the seats we are challenging the SNP at Westminster.”
Edinburgh West Candidate Christine Jardine commented:
"Our fantastic council results in the Edinburgh West wards have given us the perfect start to the General Election campaign to regain the seat from the SNP.
"Our wins show clearly that the people of Edinburgh West value the work being done by Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP and feel the SNP has failed them.
"If I am elected I'll work with Alex and our councillors to ensure the best possible representation for the people off Edinburgh West."
Edinburgh West MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton added:
“This election is a straight fight between the Liberal Democrats and the SNP. The people of Edinburgh West face a simple choice. Continue to be let down by the SNP who have shown that they only put independence first or elect a MP who will truly represent them at Westminster.
"Edinburgh West has a proud history of Liberal Democrat MPs and come June 8th we fully intend to take it back from the SNP."
