Responding to a new report from Audit Scotland warning that the Scottish Government's social security programme is at a "critical point", Scottish Liberal Democrat social security spokesperson Caron Lindsay said:
"Scottish Liberal Democrats were delighted to play a part in delivering new social security powers for Scotland worth £3 billion. This golden opportunity to tackle poverty and inequality can't be squandered.
"This report shows that there is still a mammoth task ahead. The IT infrastructure and skills must be in place to support the smooth transfer of powers. People are relying on ministers to get this right and they can't afford for their payments to go astray or be delayed.
"With a million people in Scotland living in poverty, including one in four children, the new powers must be used to establish a welfare system that is accessible, fair and commands the confidence of those who use it and those who advocate on their behalf."
