Scott to lead debate on HIAL parking charges

Shetland MSP Tavish Scott will tomorrow lead a parliamentary debate on Highland and Island Airport Ltd’s (HIAL) decision to impose car parking charges at Sumburgh, Kirkwall and Stornoway airports as he warned that the HIAL board had "no clue" about island life.

MSPs from all parties will debate the move, which has received a great deal of opposition from the general public, councillors and politicians, on Thursday 10th May as part of a Members Debate. The decision to introduce parking charges was not consulted upon with airport users, consultative committees, local politicians or local authorities.

Speaking ahead of the debate, Mr Scott said:

“This debate allows Parliament to give its views on HIAL's iniquitous policy of introducing an air tax an islanders. I expect that MSPs across the parties will want to express their disappointment that HIAL plan to impose these charges without any consultation.

"We know the HIAL board has no island representative and therefore have no clue about island life. So I still hope that the Transport Minister can accept this is a bad and wrong policy and it should be dropped.”
