Scott: Student debt ballooning under SNP

Responding to new figures from the Student Loans Company showing that the average loan balance for Scottish university leavers has risen by 93% since the SNP took power, Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP said:

“On entering government in 2007 the SNP promised to scrap all student debt in Scotland. They didn't, they dropped the policy within weeks.

“Bursaries and grants for lower-income students have halved under the SNP. Meanwhile we have seen the average amount that Scottish students are expected to repay balloon. By contrast, students in Wales from similar backgrounds have access to more support, leaving them with less debt.

“The Scottish Liberal Democrat policy of a transformative penny for education would deliver £30 million of new bursaries and support for students in higher and further education.”
