Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP has said the SNP’s record on supporting students is “shameful” after new statistics showed that bursary support for students in Scotland almost halved over the past five years.
The figures published today by SAAS also showed that the average support per student has dropped from £1,850 to £1,330 over the same period.
Commenting Mr Scott said:
“Many students across Scotland question how they will support themselves whilst getting an education. Today’s figures are worrying, particularly for students from lower-income backgrounds.
“The number of students eligible for a bursary has fallen by 2,500 since last year. For those students, loans are often the only answer. But since the SNP came to power almost ten years ago, the average loan has increased by 129%.
“Given that the SNP were elected on a promise to replace all loans with grants and to write-off all debts , today’s news is nothing short of shameful.”
