Scott: SNP record on education not up to scratch

Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesman Tavish Scott MSP today criticised the Scottish Government on its  failure to issue new guidance on the Government's curriculum before pupils returned to school.

Cabinet Secretary for education, John Swinney had promised to provide teachers with clear guidance on the curriculum before pupils returned to school this week to help close the attainment gap between students from richer and poorer backgrounds. It was reported today that no such guidance has been issued.

Commenting, Mr Scott said:

“Pupils have enjoyed the long summer break but it looks like school was out for the Scottish Government too. John Swinney promised teachers they would receive clear guidance before the start of the new academic year. Now we know that pupils will have been in lessons for weeks before the guidelines arrive.

“Once the guidance is in place it will take teachers time to get to grips with the new framework. Every day this is delayed will impact on pupils. Nicola Sturgeon has asked us to judge her government on their education record. So far it does not stand up to scrutiny.”
