Scott: SNP must value teachers

Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP has today warned that teachers are losing out after a new report found their salaries fell in real terms between 2005 and 2015

The report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) confirmed that a teacher with 15 years experience would have seen their pay fall 6% in real terms. This is in contrast to the general trend across OECD countries where teacher salaries rose in real terms over that period.

Commenting on the report, Mr Scott said:

"Anyone reading this report will be unsurprised to hear that Scottish schools are contending with well over 500 teaching vacancies.

"Teachers and support staff who feel valued in what they do are essential to reversing a decade of educational decline under this SNP government.

"Alongside lifting the public sector pay cap, ministers must commission an independent root and branch review of teachers’ terms and conditions and the demands placed upon them to ensure that we have a system that is fit for purpose - a new agreement on teachers salaries – McCrone2."
