Scott: Schools must be more than exam factories

Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP has today warned that defeat in today’s parliamentary debate shows the need for the Government to invest in education.

Commenting after the debate, Mr Scott said:

“We have seen cuts to school budgets over many years. As teachers in Shetland said to me at the weekend, look at the numbers of classroom assistants and learning support there used to be.

“Scotland has implemented a new approach to teaching since 2011 and at the same time cut the money available to schools. The results are clear: we have fallen in the international education rankings.

“The Scottish Government now needs to invest in education and reverse these cuts so that children get the best possible education.”
