Scot Lib Dems urge public to have their say on deposit return scheme

Scottish Liberal Democrats have today called for the public to get involved and have their say on plans for a deposit-return scheme for drinks containers, as Zero Waste Scotland announced a series of events will be held this summer aimed at gathering public opinion on the proposals.

Commenting on the events, Scottish Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson Mariam Mahmood said:

“Scottish Liberal Democrats were the first to call for a deposit return scheme to be introduced but for any scheme to be a success it needs to fire the public imagination. That’s why these consultations are incredibly important.

“The evidence from our neighbours in Sweden, Denmark and Germany demonstrates that a deposit return system can successfully meet the challenges of waste reduction, decreasing the need for landfill and removing dangers to wildlife.

“I would urge as many people as possible give their thoughts on the design of such a scheme so that we can finally get to grips with tackling our throw-away culture.”
