As Holyrood is set to debate the controversial rape clause today, Scottish Liberal Democrat social security spokesperson Caron Lindsay said:
“The entire Tory approach to child tax credits is like something from Victorian times and, by their own admission, some Tory MSPs view it as ‘awkward’. After the comments yesterday by Jackson Carlaw it is clear that there are those that oppose the idea but are willing to wave it through to avoid an upset within their ranks.
“It is degrading and humiliating that a woman should ever have to prove rape to the satisfaction of a civil servant in order to be able to feed her children.
“It isn’t too late for the Scottish Conservatives and Ruth Davidson to actually make an effort to change the minds of their colleagues and stand up against this deeply unpopular policy.”
