Scottish Liberal Democrats have today called on the Scottish Government to ensure that the forthcoming climate change plan ensures Scotland is a “world leader” after the UK Committee on Climate Change (CCC) said the draft contained little beyond existing policy.
The CCC warned that recent progress was unlikely to continue beyond 2020.
Scottish Liberal Democrat energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP commented:
“Experts are warning that this draft plan is not ambitious enough. These warnings must focus minds in the Scottish Government.
“Ministers have already failed to strike any agreement with local authorities on low emission zones and the development of the rapid charge network necessary for supporting electric and ultra-low emission vehicles.
“If we are to ensure that Scotland becomes a world leader in the battle against climate change the Government needs to engage local authorities in delivering sustainable transport, to push forward on renewable heating projects and create thousands more energy efficient warm homes.”
Scottish Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson Mariam Mahmood added:
"The CCC is right to highlight the lack of progress in reducing transport emissions which haven't changed in a generation.
"This won't be helped by SNP plans to cut air passenger duty. It is caving to the aviation industry at the expense of the planet. These plans are reckless because they would pump thousands of tonnes of additional emissions into the atmosphere. The Scottish Government must change course.”
