Scottish Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson Mariam Mahmood has marked National Clean Air Day (Thurs 15 June) by demanding Scottish Government Ministers raise their ambition in the fight to tackle harmful air pollution.
The demand follows the publication this week of the official Scottish Greenhouse Gas Emissions statistics. For the first time ever the statistics recorded transport as the biggest polluter, attributed to an increase in emissions from road transport, in particular passenger cars, light trucks, lorries and buses.
Commenting, Ms Mahmood said:
"Liberal Democrats have been clear that the Scottish Government’s Draft Climate Change Plan must be strengthened to attract people onto public transport and encourage a move to electric and ultra-low emission vehicles.
"National Clean Air Day should act as a stark reminder to Scottish Government Ministers that the challenge of air pollution must be matched with proper ambition.
