Responding to the First Minister's announcement of plans for a deposit return scheme for bottles and cans, Scottish Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson Mariam Mahmood said:
“Liberal Democrats have long backed creative ideas to achieve a zero waste society, such as taking forward successful pilot projects on a deposit return system. We therefore welcome the news that Scotland will follow Sweden, Denmark, Germany and other countries in introducing a deposit return system.
“The credit for this progress lies squarely with campaigners up and down the country who have fought hard to get to this point. It has taken the government a long time to budge, but this move today shows the importance of not giving in.
“While we can look to see advances in waste reduction with a deposit return system, questions on what a Scotland model would look like remain. The onus therefore remains on SNP Ministers to present a plan for proper public and parliamentary scrutiny.
