Scottish Liberal Democrat rural affairs spokesperson Mike Rumbles MSP has called on the SNP to deliver on their broadband commitment after an official report by Audit Scotland on superfast broadband today described targets to reach rural areas as ‘challenging’.
The Scottish Government Minister responsible confirmed as much and admitted that more could be done ‘at a Scotland level to extend coverage, particularly to rural areas’.
Commenting Mr Rumbles said:
“The message from the Scottish Government today was clear – be prepared for us to backtrack on our promise to deliver 100% coverage by 2021.
“No-one ever doubted that delivering superfast broadband to rural and remote communities would be challenging, but this was one of many promises made by the SNP on the run up to the election and now it seems they may not have understood their commitment.
“Most of the welcome improvement in broadband speeds so far has been in urban areas, but the Scottish Government need to prioritise rural communities if they hope to meet their targets. That means investment and real progress now.”
