Speaking in response to the outcome of the EU Fisheries Council in Brussels, Scottish Liberal Democrat rural affairs spokesperson Mike Rumbles MSP praised quota increases but warned that careful monitoring is necessary.
The agreement reached by EU fisheries ministers saw increases approved for key species including cod and whiting and has been broadly welcomed by fishing industry representatives.
Mr Rumbles said:
“This has been a productive negotiation with our European partners and in particular, the news that fishing quotas will increase will be welcomed by Scotland’s boats, salespeople and processors.
“However, work still needs to be done. Increased quota may help but Scotland’s primary catches will have to be carefully monitored to avoid any possibility of our boats being forced to tie-up because a specific quota is finished through the year.”
