Scottish Liberal Democrat rural affairs spokesperson Mike Rumbles MSP has said that a UK Government initiated review of farm funding announced today must ensure that Scotland maintains its present share of UK wide agricultural funding.
The independent advisory panel will look at how subsidies are handed out across the UK. The UK Government have also confirmed today it will not use the Barnett formula alone as a basis for distributing farm funds post-2022.
Mr Rumbles said:
"Scottish agriculture makes an enormous contribution to the UK, while facing a very challenging set of circumstances and it's only right that this is reflected in the review.
"This review needs to consult widely. However, I expect Mr Gove to hold to his word when he told me in his evidence to the Scottish Parliament’s Rural Economy committee that Scotland would maintain the 16% of UK wide agricultural funding that it currently receives.
"What's more, I urge the Scottish Government to engage constructively with this review. The future of Scottish farming is far too important to be put at risk by intergovernmental intransigence."
