Scottish Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Mike Rumbles MSP has today called on the Scottish Government to deliver after the Scottish Parliament backed a Lib Dem amendment stating that "every schoolchild should have the opportunity to benefit from cycle training."
Recent figures from Transport Scotland which show that cycling makes up just 1% of all journeys, despite an SNP Government target for it to account for 10% by 2020
Mr Rumbles said:
“In 2009 the Scottish Government committed to a target of 10% of all journeys to be made by bike by 2020. Sadly almost a decade on, the percentage of journeys taken by bike has barely shifted since the flagship target was set.
“As well as increasing the share of the transport budget that is spent on cycling and active transport, the Scottish Government must ensure that safe provision for cyclists and pedestrians is built into the transport system and that people are equipped and feel confident to cycle from an early age.
"On the back of today's vote the Scottish Government should now commit to ensuring that every schoolchild has the opportunity to benefit from cycle training. As well as tackling obesity and easing congestion on roads, this would help meet Scotland’s ambitious climate change targets and reduce air pollution."
