Following the announcement that a new study will examine extending the Borders Railway to Carlisle, Scottish Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Mike Rumbles MSP commented:
“Bosses at Borders and Carlisle councils, Liberal Democrat campaigners and local people have long called for a study to be conducted into the feasibility of extending the line.
“Extending the Borders Railway could have a huge effect on the region, improving transport links to major markets and boosting the economy.
“This remains a region which is all too often left behind by an SNP Government with a blinkered Central Belt focus. That is why it needs to show some ambition and build on the historic reinstatement of the rail link between Waverley and Tweedbank.”
The 2016 Liberal Democrat manifesto called for a feasibility study into extending the Borders’ Railway from Tweedbank to Hawick and Carlisle, along with other potential route re-opening opportunities.
