Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP has today said that the First Minister has directly echoed the policy of Margaret Thatcher over national testing which will lead to the creation of school league tables in Scotland.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
“The First Minister’s support for national testing would have been met with approval from Margaret Thatcher, and her minister Michael Forsyth, who believed in the same, divisive approach.
“Nicola Sturgeon’s comments today even directly echo that of Michael Forsyth. But they are wrong. The Educational Institute of Scotland has said that national testing ‘crushes creativity both for learners and for teachers, does not take full account of pupil progress and causes unnecessary stress for the children and young people who are subjected to it’.
“It’s time the First Minister abandoned this dangerous Thatcher-like approach. We should see a First Minister focus on supporting schools properly rather than pitting classrooms against each other.”
