Ahead of the Scottish Governments publication on its options for Scotland after the EU referendum, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP today has called on the SNP to recognise that the best chance Scotland has at protecting its interests by staying in the European Union is to let the public have a say on the terms of Brexit.
Momentum for the campaign has been building with a historic win in the Richmond by-election and top politicians, like John Major agreeing that giving the public a say on the terms of Brexit is the right option.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
“Ever since the vote on 23rd June the SNP have been using the vote to further advance their desire for independence. Today they have the opportunity heal the division in the country and not widen the divide with an independence option.
“The Liberal Democrats are the only party that wants Scotland to remain in the UK and the UK to remain in the EU. That is the best way for Scotland to remain within the European Union. It is right and democratic to give the people a say on the terms of Brexit in a Brexit Deal Referendum. Anything less would give the Tories a blank cheque Brexit with the general public facing the consequences.
“If the SNP are true believers in the EU they would put independence to one side and work with parties across the whole of the UK that are working to protect the UK’s position with the EU. That’s how we can protect Scotland.”
