Rennie: Recall system needed to make Parliament like any other workplace

Speaking after the Scottish Parliament Standards Committee debate on the Sexual Harassment Inquiry, Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Willie Rennie said:

“It’s absolutely astounding that while in almost half of cases of sexual harassment reported in the Parliament identified an MSP as the perpetrator, MSP conduct to their own staff is not regulated under the current code.

“Just like any other workplace the Scottish Parliament must have universally applied sexual harassment policies, serious sanctions for people who behave inappropriately and a route map for how to sack MSPs in cases of proven misconduct.

“I look forward to exploring the possibility of introducing a system of recall with my fellow parliamentarians. There must be consequences for politicians and the decision about whether someone is fit for post should ultimately rest with the people who put them there.

“The Scottish Parliament has made a serious commitment to its staff to stamp out sexual harassment and foster a zero tolerance culture. Recall is the way to do that.”
