The leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Willie Rennie MSP, is using the Liberal Democrat National Action Day to promote the party's plan for a Pupil Premium as part of a liberal vision to get the country fit for the future.
The National Action Day will take place tomorrow (Saturday, 16 January) with Scottish Liberal Democrats coming together at events taking place from the Borders to Shetland.
Mr Rennie has emphasised the pupil premium as a Liberal Democrat success story in England and said he hoped to replicate it in Scotland as soon as possible.
Mr Rennie said: “Thanks to Liberal Democrats, a pupil premium has already been introduced in England and has been providing targeted help to the young people who need it the most for more than four years.
“By extending it to Scotland so the schools here working with the most disadvantaged children have extra funds to support them, we have the chance to close the attainment gap and help every child and young person onto a footing from which they excel all the way through life.
“Policies like the pupil premium are very close to our hearts and by taking part in this National Action Day you will be helping spread the word about the positive and liberal values this party stands for.
“As Scottish schools go back after the Christmas holidays, teachers and staff are all well aware of the incredible challenges they face with drastic cuts to education budgets looming on the horizon.
“But instead of the government creating barriers to what our children and young people can achieve, what they deserve is better quality education, more nursery place and the knowledge that if they need it help is available.
“In May Scotland has the opportunity to make sure there are more liberal voices in parliament to push education higher up government priorities. It has the chance to help us make our pupil premium proposals a success.
“Saturday’s National Action Day is your chance to find out more about the kind of Scotland we want in the future and the ideas we’ll be outlining in the run-up to May. By joining us to mark the achievements of Liberal Democrats, like the pupil premium, you’ll be helping us continue to make positive changes in this country and helping every single person living here achieve their potential.”
