Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Willie Rennie MSP, has joined calls for the Chilcot report to be published before the election.
Earlier this week, Liberal Democrat Foreign Office spokesperson Tim Farron wrote to Cabinet Office Secretary Francis Maude demanding Ministers commit to publishing the report before the election if it is received on time. Liberal Democrats have urged the Conservatives to agree to release the report within a week of receipt.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has this weekend written to Mr Rennie to ask that he join her consensus in securing the reports release before the election.Commenting, Mr Rennie said:
"We agree with Nicola Sturgeon. It is important that the lessons learnt from Chilcot report are learnt whilst there are people involved in parliament who are in a position to answer for their actions. It has been over five years since the Iraq Inquiry began taking oral evidence. The publication of the report has been long awaited. Liberal Democrats are pushing for the Chilcot report to be published within one week of receipt - even if the report is submitted within purdah period. Politicians from all parties across the UK must push for these findings to be finally brought into the light."
