Commenting on new figures showing that 62% of 2017/18 school leavers from the least deprived areas went on to higher education, compared to 26% of those from the most deprived areas, Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Willie Rennie said:
“There is clearly still huge gulf between the number of young people from wealthy backgrounds and more deprived backgrounds going on to higher education. Under the SNP, bursary and grant support has been slashed. But it will take much more than reversing that to enable everyone to achieve their potential.
“Every single school leaver can be part of a high-skill, high-wage economy.
“Scottish Liberal Democrats have already persuaded the Scottish Government to expand nursery provision and introduce a pupil premium for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Next we need to see every child get a proper breakfast before learning starts and colleges really promoted as the route to high-level technical qualifications for all young people.”
