Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP today called for a Scottish Government website to be reviewed after concerns over career recommendations provided to young people in Fife.
Skills Development Scotland’s "My World of Work" tool is a website aimed at helping school pupils decide what they want to do when they finish their education. Media reports this morning revealed pupils from Bell Baxter High were told to consider careers as chimney sweeps and acupuncturists despite excelling academically.
Commenting Mr Rennie said:
“Good, solid careers advice should be based on the analysis of educational performance, work or voluntary experience, an assessment of the personality but also an intelligent human assessment of the person.
"The advice this website is handing out seems to bear absolutely no relation to the skills or wishes of the pupils using this resource. The suggestions that are coming out of this website are comical and it should be reviewed."
