Radiologist shortage would have been caught by workforce planning annual report

Responding to the news that radiologists have issued a “red alert” because of a shortage of staff, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:

“It’s absolutely appalling that the Scottish Government has taken its eye so far off the ball that Scotland’s radiology services could be in danger of collapsing.

“The promise of only 50 new training places is late in the day and pretty uninspiring. Radiologists are the linchpin required for treatments across the NHS. Their intervention and direction ensure the smooth operation of other health and hospital services.

“The Liberal Democrats want to see the Health Minister publish an annual report on workforce planning and lead an annual debate on it at Parliament. That would mean failings can be identified and rectified before it’s too late. If the SNP were watching this closely we’d not be at the stage where radiologists were issuing mayday calls.”
