Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Alison McInnes has said that reports that firearms carried by police officers in Scotland are expected to be covered with a more discreet holster shows a fundamental misunderstanding of concerns over the arming of police.
Commenting on the reports, Alison McInnes MSP said:
"This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of concerns over the arming of police. New holsters will do nothing to assuage the fears within local communities.
"The public are still being invited to make their views heard on the arming of police officers through the SPA's consultation. Not content to wait for the outcome, it appears senior management at police HQ are presumptively seeking a workaround for this controversial policy when local communities may call for it be scrapped altogether.
"Scottish Liberal Democrats believe the arming of police should be decided on a local basis, instead of a blanket policy for all of Scotland. Nothing should be taken off the table until the HMICS and SPA finish their reviews."
