About

Biography:

Jo Swinson entered Parliament in 2005, winning her East Dunbartonshire seat from Labour.

Jo Swinson attended Douglas Academy in Milngavie. After reading Management at the London School of Economics, she worked in Marketing and as a PR Manager for a number of companies, latterly the Glasgow-based company SpaceandPeople. Jo helped the company win national awards including Best E-Business at the Scottish Winners at the Web Awards 2003.

Her interests include hiking, reading everything from Philip Pullman to Jane Austen, going to the gym and salsa dancing; she is a member of Amnesty International.

Jo has been an active member of the Liberal Democrats since 1997; as a student she was Secretary and then Vice Chair of the Liberal Democrat Youth & Students. She was elected to the Liberal Democrats' Federal Executive in 2002 and currently Chairs the Party's Campaign for Gender Balance. In 2003 she stood for the Scottish Parliament in Strathkelvin & Bearsden, increasing the Lib Dem vote by 4%.

As an MP her work on local issues includes: campaigning to save local Post Offices, for Votes at 16 and the citizen's pension and against the Council Tax; and taking action to tackle excess packaging.

Jo was appointed as spokesperson for Foreign Affairs in January 2008. Previously she was spokesperson on Culture, Media and Sport [2005-06]; Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland [2006-07] and Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities [2007].

She is currently the second-youngest MP in the House of Commons, replacing fellow MP Sarah Teather; she was the first ever Member of Parliament born in the 1980s.

Jo Swinson is one of the first MPs to undertake regular podcasting .
