Phone:0131 348 6702

Born in Peebles and raised in Selkirkshire, Jim is a real South of Scotland man, with family roots in East Lothian, Dumfriesshire and Ayrshire. A farmer by birth, Jim is proud that his two sons now run the conservation minded family farm in Selkirkshire's Yarrow Valley.

During the ten years before being elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2007, Jim represented the Borders and engaged in public service through his work with the National Farmers' Union of Scotland, Scottish Enterprise Borders, Borders Forest Trust and the Borders Forum for Rural Sustainability.

Until the 2007 election he was Chair of Environment and Land Use for the NFUS, a Director of NFUS and was also Chairman of Lothians and Borders NFU, looking after 1,300 members.

Jim was particularly active during the 2001 foot and mouth crisis and throughout his term of office in these posts he lobbied regularly against and with Ministers, MEPs, MSPs, MPs and Councillors.

Jim feels privileged to represent South Scotland in the Scottish Parliament and has been fortunate to have led successful campaigns across the region such as forcing the SNP to ditch their unpopular plans to sell off public forests, securing funding for the Crichton Campus, preventing the closure of community hospitals and protecting the future of respite facilities for patients with debilitating illnesses.

Nationally, Jim is leading the Scottish Liberal Democrat campaign against the SNP’s reductions to grants available to bus operators which he believes are jeopardising bus services in the Borders and across Scotland.
