About
Dr Gordon Macdonald was brought up in East Dunbartonshire. Originally from Milngavie, he has lived in Lenzie since 2002. He is very pleased to have been chosen to represent Strathkelvin & Bearsden for the Scottish Liberal Democrats.
Gordon is committed to being a strong local voice for the people of Strathkelvin & Bearsden. As a father of three children, he is passionate about giving every child a fair start in life, and about working with Nick Clegg, Tavish Scott and the Scottish Liberal Democrats to make Strathkelvin & Bearsden fairer and greener for the next generation.
Gordon was elected to East Dunbartonshire Council in 2003 and served in that capacity for 4 years. As Vice Convenor of the Planning Board, he worked to ensure that a Masterplan was developed for Bishopbriggs town centre and to ensure the delivery of the new leisure centre and link road for Kikintilloch. He was also involved in drafting planning policy and a new economic development strategy for a large part of the West of Scotland area.
Gordon studied Politics at Strathclyde University and Economic Development at the University of Glasgow. He has a PhD and is pursuing further studies in political theology at Edinburgh University. He works as Scottish Parliamentary Officer for the Christian public affairs charity CARE and also as a Policy Officer for the anti-euthanasia coalition Care Not Killing. He has worked previously for the Civil Service and UNICEF. He has a wide experience of politics at both the national and local level. His work gives him an in depth knowledge of politics at Holyrood.
With this experience and his academic background, Gordon is well placed to contribute at Holyrood on matters of economic development. He has an interest in overseas development and supports fair-trade.
